The First Leap into the Deep

There was once a zine which became a blog. The zine was Connoiseurs of Concrete and the blog is now called Connoiseurs of the Deep. I don't much care for blogs, and you may or may not know what a zine is, but before I get bogged down explaining any of that, let me just say that this blog is about surfing, but, at the same time, it is not.
There will be stuff about surfing, but also there will be writing.
"Writing about surfing?" you ask, excitedly.
"Kind of", I say, "But more like writing around and about surfing".
I am interested, okay, I'm obsessed with surfing, but I almost never see it represented in the media the way that I myself see it. Some come close, but no one really manages to nail it. On the other hand, there is Everything Else. What is Everything Else?
It's just kind of all the other stuff that I'm interested in, stuff that may or may not be a little under-represented in the world and deserving of a look. But hey, what do I know, right?

But first the water. Oh, the water. There's a time, in the late morning and early afternoon on bright days, when the sun shoots little diamonds of light in every direction and the water turns a lighter blue and everyone smiles. It's like this:

Baja has at least 900 miles of coastline on the Pacific side. There are so many places to surf that you could probably spend the rest of your life exploring them.... and that's just Baja. Some people refuse to go into Mexico.
They are afraid to drive into Mexico because they think it is hot, desolate, and scary.

Those of us who dwell in the Sunset refer to it as "the briny deep," lubber!
